Know Before You Go:
The quintessential Sawtooth hike, and some would claim, the best hike in all of Idaho. Whether you agree or not, this is an iconic Sawtooth route.
This route takes you on a tour of all the Sawtooths have to offer. We completed the loop in 2 days/1 night but would recommend extending your trip by an extra night to really enjoy all the sights.
We highly recommend completing the loop clockwise!
Alice, Twin and Toxaway Lakes are all great places to camp. Lots of water sources to refill water.
No advanced permits are needed, just self register at the trailhead.
You'll likely be sharing the trail with many horseback riders so be on the lookout and share the trail.
You can choose to tack on many additional lakes in the area like Edna or Imogene if you have extra time. We chose to add Edith to the traditional Toxaway loop (please note there is no camping allowed at Edith).
Bear proof bear canisters are required for food storage in this area.
Bring water shoes for the one river crossing close to the end of the loop that requires all hikers to wade across to the other side, there are no bridges or dry ways across.
Dog friendly.
If you don't have the desire or the gear to camp you could complete this route as a long day hike.
