Know Before You Go:
- This is the most popular and crowded hike at the Grand Canyon. Park in the Maswik Lodge lot, Backcountry Office, or find roadside parking and walk to the trailhead.
- Alternatively you can take the shuttle to the trailhead.
- By far the hardest day hike one can do at the Grand Canyon; only recommended for experienced hikers as the trail grade is extremely steep.
- The heavy crowds thin out after hitting the bottom of the canyon.
- Micro-spikes are necessary during the winter season since the trail freezes over.
- Carry lots of water, snacks and sun protection as the trail is completely exposed.
- This out + back hits the Colorado River; feel free to turn back at any point.
- Bathrooms and water refilling stations can be found at several points along the trail.
- Be sure to save energy for the final ascent! Make sure to allot enough daylight for the return trip.
